Styling your mantel during the holidays is a great way to bring festive cheer into your home. Here are five steps to help you create a beautiful and balanced display:
1. Find a Focal Point
Begin by selecting a central piece that will anchor your mantel. This could be a large mirror, a framed art print, or a statement piece like a wreath, or festive stems in a pot. This focal point will set the tone for the rest of your decor.
2. Layer in Garland/Greenery
A fresh or faux garland can be the heart of your mantel styling. Drape across your mantel to hang evenly on both ends, or style to hang asymmetrically, with more garland on one side. Create a fuller look by using more than one garland or by adding stems to the garland so that it appears thicker and more textured. Adding in lights and ornaments will add dimension to your look.
3. Add in Asymmetrical or Symmetrical Decor Pieces
Depending on your aesthetic, you can create a balanced look by using symmetrical decor (like two candles or vases on each side) or an asymmetrical style with varied heights and shapes on either side. For example, with your focal point either in the centre or side of your mantel, place other items accordingly around the focal point. If your focal point is a pot on the right, place taller candlesticks on the left, with smaller decorative items throughout the middle area and beside the pot. Alternatively, place the taller candlesticks directly beside the pot and smaller pieces on the left side, creating an even more asymmetrical look. A variety of items keeps the arrangement dynamic while maintaining visual interest.
4. Incorporate Candles or Lights for Warmth
Candles are a must-have for holiday mantels—they add warmth and ambiance. Consider using a mix of pillar candles, taper candles, or even battery-operated LED candles and holiday houses. Differing heights of candles or houses add dimension to the look amongst the varying other decor items and greenery. For a traditional touch, consider scented candles in festive fragrances like cinnamon, pine, or cranberry.
5. Finish with Stocking to Add more Texture
Hang stockings from the mantle for a personal touch that will delight family and friends. You can choose stockings in matching colours, or create an eclectic mix with different stockings for each household member. Make sure to continue the colour scheme from the mantel decor down to the stockings; so that if your pot or extra styling pieces boast green or brown, your stockings also are made of brown or green material.
By following these steps, you'll create a beautiful and cohesive mantel that captures the spirit of the holidays while making your home feel extra cozy and festive!
