How to Choose Sustainable Dinnerware

How to Choose Sustainable Dinnerware

Finding safe, eco-friendly dinnerware is a challenge these days. Unfortunately,  businesses claim to be 'green', 'sustainable' and 'eco-friendly' when in reality they aren't. There are also so many materials to choose from; silicone, bamboo, cork etc. Through our research we found a French eco-lifestyle brand called EKOBO. They value sustainability in all aspects of their business, especially when it comes to material.

Our outdoor dinnerware from EKOBO is made from FSC-certified bamboo. Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, as it can grow up to one meter per day. It also doesn’t require fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides to grow.

EKOBO mixes bamboo fibres with a binding agent called melamine to create a biopolymer used in their dinnerware. This binder helps to prolong the life of their products!

One common question about bamboo dinnerware is whether the binding agent melamine is safe. EKOBO uses an A5 food-grade melamine binder that is 100% non-toxic and food safe.

Their materials possess absolutely no health risks and are suitable for hot and cold foods & liquids. Since no varnish or coating is used, they will never leach harmful chemicals either.

EKOBO incorporates sustainability in all aspects of their business. Not only do they use sustainable materials, but their bamboo is collected from FSC-certified chopstick factories. They use thermopression (or heat) to create their products leaving little waste. Lastly, their dinnerware collection is durable, reusable and dishwasher safe - making it a great alternative to traditional single-use outdoor diningware.
